Trash Sculptures

Trash Sculptures

This is a link to a website that has 7 different trash sculptures. They are really neat. I'm thinking about comparing our project to this, but I'm hoping to find more things that relate to our message. I had to share this website because I liked the different techniques they used to make each object.

Basket Building

This is the Longaberger basket making company building. It is also a basket. Here is some more info:

Outstanding Features

  • Offices are situated around a seven-story, 30,000 sq. ft atrium where employees and guests can enjoy the natural daylight from the skylight.
  • Two basket handles are attached to the building with replica copper and wooden rivets.
  • The handles are heated to prevent ice from forming.
  • Two Longaberger tags are attached to the sides of the building. The gold leaf painted tags are 725 lbs each and measure 25' long x 7' tall x 3" thick.

Cloud Gate

Inspired by the look of Liquid Mercury, artist Anish Kapoor created his public sculpture “Cloud Gate.” The sculpture is made of high polished stainless steel, and it’s mirror finish reflects the city’s skyline like a giant fun house mirror! Currently, this popular sculpture sits as the center piece of AT&T Plaza in Milennium Park, Chicago Illinois.

Pink-Snails

These eight-foot pink snails will claim Miami on November 19th – not because they want to take over the Earth, but because they’re an installation by the Cracking Art Group and Galleria Ca’ d’Oro. These giant snails will appear at key entrance points into Miami as well as the Art Deco Welcome Center over the course of six weeks, slated to make their first appearance at the Art Basel Miami Beach, then making their way west to bask under the Florida sun.
The snails originated in Italy, where the Cracking Art Group (CAP) is infamous for creating a number of other giant animals and sculptures (CAP is known for sticking tortoises in the 2009 G-8 Environmental Summit in Siracusa, Italy). The group is committed to sustainability and expresses their fervor through creating sculptures from recycled plastic – one aspect that the city of Miami found particularly appealing. “Recycling is so much a part of the culture now that it’s easy to forget how important it is and that we can always do more. This fun art project will make people stop and wonder— and then stop and think,” says Miami Beach Mayor Matti Bower.
The installation’s official name is “The REgeneration Art project,” but it’s best characterized by the name of its website: pinksnails.com. While in Florida, some of the snails will also be lit by solar-powered lights, but we anticipate all of them will stick out like alien orbs along the Miami expressways, provoking laughter, rolled eyes, and maybe a sense of amused foreboding.

Cool Globes

These are globe sculptures placed in Crissy Field in San Francisco. This was created by artists Gavin & the Gang to show some earth-loving initiative designed to depict simple solutions to global warming. They are sending an environmental message and it's also attractive and will bring in more tourists.

Green Corner

Green Corner, a collaboration between Otto Karvonen and Jon Irigoyen, is a spatial artwork consisting of lawn that is installed on a parking space. The lawn is equipped with some comfortable garden furniture, to provide a relaxing break in the middle of the hectic urban space. The work raises questions about public space in general; to whom it belongs and what can be done with it.

Street Art: Joshua Allen Harris' Inflatable Bag Monsters

Street artist Joshua Allen Harris is another great example of what you can achieve with discarded materials and creative ingenuity. The life he gives to his creatures is fascinating to watch.

Tentacles of Terror.

This is called Tentacles of Terror or Tackle of the Tentacle. It is located in the Slovenian town of Ljubljana. A group of environmentalists, The Miha Artnak, is responsible for this piece. They collected trash (mostly plastic bags and plastic cups) from all over town and compiled them into this sculpture, which contains over 40,000 bags and 7,500 used cups. The piece continues to grow and be added to.
I found this while looking up other projects similar to our own, and it struck me that while we used the words to form a message, this piece used a monster taking over the town to show how environmental problems can overtake the world.
I like this piece because the monster is actually kind of cute, but making up the cute face is really something terrible.

Watch this!

it's kind of a slow video but its awesome

World's First Living Billboard

A project brought to life through the partnering of Banrock Station Winery and Natural England, this living billboard catches the eye of pedestrians in efforts to preserve 2,100 acres of wildflowers in England(?) Like our project, most of the billboard is made from recyclable materials which will be reused after the installation, and all of the printed parts are 100% biodegradable.

The billboard itself is made up of all native wildflowers and depicts a wine bottle (of course) pouring them out. The bees and butterflies are there because "One third of our food is pollinated by bees and butterflies which need the nectar and pollen from wildflowers to exist."

This is where I got the interactive "water me" idea from for our project. I feel like it was the one thing our installation is missing because it has great potential to be super engaging to the public.

Portly Ronald

Portly Ronald McDonald
By Ron English

I didn't find much info on these sculpture, but I liked them so much that I had to post them.

These sculptures call attention to the growing obesity problem that is fueled by fast food restaurants in a humorous and bold way. By taking the poster boy for one of the largest fast food campaigns in the world, English is pointing out what McDonald's should be advertising.

WALK RED

I really could not find much on this piece but it was located in China and it was a temporary installation of 10,000 umbrellas.

INSIDE OUT

"INSIDE OUT is a large-scale participatory art project that transforms messages of personal identity into pieces of artistic work. Everyone is challenged to use black and white photographic portraits to discover, reveal and share the untold stories and images of people around the world. These digitally uploaded images will be made into posters and sent back to the project’s co-creators for them to exhibit in their own communities. People can participate as an individual or in a group; posters can be placed anywhere, from a solitary image in an office window to a wall of portraits on an abandoned building or a full stadium. These exhibitions will be documented, archived and viewable virtually."

I feel like this is public because they have videos on how you can get involved.

Pixel Pour 2.0

There's no doubt that we're living in a society that's becoming more digitized with each passing day. Possibly serving as a satirical take of our world today or as a simple poke to our daily routine, Kelly Goeller has installed a pixelated rendition of water pouring out onto the Mercer Street in SoHo New York. Nevertheless, the piece can certainly lighten any passerby's day.
