New Work by Christo

Over The River, Christo Plans to Install Fabric Over Arkansas River
BY EDW LYNCH ON NOVEMBER 8, 2011

“Over The River” is an upcoming art installation by Christo in which he plans to cover 5.9 miles of a 42 mile stretch of the Arkansas River in Colorado with fabric. The $50 million project was given the go-ahead by Federal regulators on Monday (it is awaiting final approval by local authorities). Pending approval, the project is scheduled for display for two weeks in August, 2014.

Over The River is a two-week temporary work of art by the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. The project’s plans call for 5.9 miles of silvery, luminous fabric panels to be suspended high above the Arkansas River along a 42-mile stretch of the river between Salida and Cañon City in south-central Colorado. Fabric panels will be suspended at eight distinct areas of the river that were selected by the artists for their aesthetic merits and technical viability.

For more, see Christo discussing his vision for the project and talking with locals about how he came up with the concept.

The concept drawing by Christo is really interesting. I didn't fully see it as being that low in the picture on our blog. I think that would be very fun to canoe or kayak under. When it is done, I want to go see it too.
